AVID Students Raise $$, Awareness About Heart Health

Wichita West High AVID Juniors this week are raising money for the American Heart Association.  It's part of the annual "Hoops for Heart" fundraiser.  Usually this is a district-wide program, but this year it's just Wichita West High students taking on the fundraiser as a 'service learning project,' says AVID teacher Renee Laetari.
AVID students are typically the first in their family to attend college.  The program is designed to provide support for their academic efforts to help improve grades and to provide them with professional-skill development.
Laetari said, "Usually I name a couple of student leaders to direct the community service project, but this year I've had several students just step up and get things done. I'm really proud of them."
Monday they sold hot chocolate before school.
Tuesday they sold elote or Mexican style street corn during lunch.
Wednesday they sold passes for students to wear hats to school.
Thursday they may sell more elote along with the planned walking tacos.
And, Friday they plan to hold a bake sale during lunch, after school and at the home basketball game vs Heights.  Some of the AVID students are also planning a raffle shooting competition for half-time of the game.

Not willing to wait, some students went for the hard sell, seeking out potential customers as they passed by.

$2 was all it took to get a tasty Mexian style treat Tuesday, and help out a good cause, not to mention a classmate!

Looking for the next hungry, or maybe just generous, customer.

It's never too late to buy some elote, according to some of the AVID students, still tracking down customers while others were starting to put the food away.

One more cup of elote before closing up shop.

The money raised during this week's activities will go to help the American Heart Association.

Elote is a Mexican-style treat, creamed corn with lime juice, parmesan cheese, and chili powder.  Often the 'cream' is mayonnaise.

Helping others can be a lot of fun, judging by the smiles and laughter among these AVID students.

Last call Tuesday for a yummy treat.
