Cheerleading: Motivation and Entertainment

Game Time

Story By: Ralph Dayacap

During a basketball game many people enjoy the food, atmosphere and, most important, the actual game. But when the team needs that extra push to score a basket or get down on defense you can always count on the cheerleaders to cheer them on. You can hear them yell "D-fense" or the Pioneer Chant that motivates the team to go further.
Not only does the West High Cheer Team motivate the players but the cheerleaders also provide entertainment to the spectators watching. They always seem to awe the crowd with their turns and twists. These cheerleaders are a draw all by themselves, even without the basketball game.
In addition to all their hard work on the court, the Cheer team attends contests themselves.  We'll take a look at what all the West High cheerleaders are up to and why the team is so undervalued in our regular issue when it comes out later this month.
Sophomore Esmeralda Corral cheers the West High basketball team on during a time-out against heights Highschool on February 2nd.

Cheer Co-Captain/Dance Captain Grace Evans, Senior, motivates the players by clapping her hands and leading the cheer team on with dances and chants against Heights High School.

Junior Keiyonna Smith yells the Pioneer Chant during a hard fought game against Heights. The cheer team gave it there all motivating the basketball team to go for every lose ball and after every made free throws.
