School Shootings

Safety Training and Precautions at Wichita West High

By Kylee Hinkle

Valentine's day is for showing love to that one special person in your life however, that took an unexpected turn for students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida when 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz walked into the school and opened fire killing 17 people.
Sadly school shootings are becoming more common in today's society that unfortunately it isn't a surprise anymore when one crosses through the headline of a news station.
Many concerned parents are now asking questions of "Does the high school's actually practice these kind of tragic events? How often so?"
Joel Hudson the principal here at West High ensures that in case of a tragic event such as a school shooting, West High is safe.
Hudson replied that "We do practice by conducting some kind of drill each semester. We also review crisis and safety items with our teachers throughout the year. Maybe we will do more practice going forward."
Many student believe that pioneers are not practicing or educated well on a crisis such as a school shooting.
Junior Kiara Walker expressing "No I don't feel we do enough drills to ensure students in a weather emergency but defiantly not in a intruder emergency, students should know exactly where to go in every one of their classes and not just in their Academy Time."
Walker wasn't the only one whom expressed her thought about if drills are practiced enough.
Senior Sidney Poulter stating, "This is a very real life situation that has happened more and more over just these last two months. We have threats all the time and sadly it can happen any day."
In further digging in case of a tragic event the Wichita Ice Center located at 505 W Maple St is West's safe place. The ice center is located only a few blocks from the school.
While many believe we need to practice more, Kalee Heppler said, "We shouldn't practice because the shooter will most likely be a student and if we practice then they'll know exactly what to do when they open fire."
The best thing to do in the event of a school shooting is when the intruder enters a room do not hesitate. Start throwing anything at the armed gunmen because when things are flying at you it makes it harder to aim, thus creating a distraction and time to run.
If the intruder's weapon falls to the ground quickly grab the weapon, place it into a box or trash can then slowly walk out of the building with extended arms and shout that you have the weapon, then calmly let the police take it. If the intruder is still inside being held by students or running also let them know.
Barricade the door and cover any classroom door window that could lead the gunman to seeing you. Make sure the lights are off, remain silent and DO NOT make phone calls. Remember to remain calm. Wait for the SWAT team or police to walk you out and listen to their instructions very carefully.
Get to safety first and then listen what to do from there.
School shootings are a very serious event.  Our hearts go out the victims families of the 17 innocent people who's lives were taken in the Florida shooting.
